I’m Mary Kate, an award-winning public relations professional, writer, editor, runner, music trivia buff and Illinois native, who has spent nearly a decade calling Virginia home.
I’m a detail-oriented go-getter and strategic thinker, who loves looking at the 30,000-foot view to manage major projects (I’m not afraid of heights). As a communicator, I thrive on variety, from connecting reporters with the right source in media relations to writing in-depth features, crafty tweets and everything in between. In the world of web content strategy, I’ve conducted content overhauls, written and streamlined copy and created webpage designs based on analytics and research to give users an excellent website experience. I regularly plan and execute communications projects that get results.
I’m a wordsmith. I made headlines in 2015, placing 2nd for large newspapers in the Virginia Press Association headline writing competition. Wordplay is my forte, but my keen eye for detail on longer reads has made me the go-to writer and editor for internal (campus emails and award-winning newsletter copy) and external communications (news releases, media advisories and stories). I have written for VCU News and VCU Health News at Virginia Commonwealth University and EVMS’ magazine and edited stories for newspapers including The Roanoke Times, Daily Press and The Virginian-Pilot’s weekly newspapers.
I’m a problem-solver and a team player — the first to raise my hand when one needs lending. When colleagues or clients hit a technical snag or a writer’s block wall, I’m the person they call. I develop communications plans with unique solutions to the challenges clients and colleagues face, thinking outside the box to deliver results.
My background includes positions in public relations, web content strategy, marketing and communications, online and multimedia journalism, online and social media management, student life and features writing.
But the subject I care most about is people. There’s nothing I enjoy more than helping an individual tell a story or share a message with the world.
